A novitiate gives birth to a child in a convent, who is found dead in a wastepaper basket. A court-mandated psychiatrist and the Mother Superior of the convent clash during the resulting investigation. The mother calls the conception a miracle, while the psychiatrist clearly sees the human intervention. A battle of wills, Christian beliefs, morality & science ensue, while the young novitiate is increasingly being exposed to the ‘big, bad world’. The age-old question still persists – science or belief?
